Too-Much-Information Technology
How much information to we need to send and receive online?
I’ve amassed thousands of blogs, e-mail and forum accounts since I first went online 12 years ago. Apart from that, there are also my photo dumpsites, bookmarked sites and other miscellaneous online bits and pieces here and there. If I were to check each and every one of them, a whole day wouldn’t be enough.
So, in an effort to make my life less complicated, I’ll be making a partial list of the things I’ll keep and the things I’ll have to let go.
Sites to Keep:
Gmail & Yahoo! Mail
Most of the time, I use my Yahoo! account for online registration purposes while my Gmail account serves as my means of communication with friends.
Yahoo! Messenger
Indispensible, since most of the people I know have Y!M. One of the main ways to contact people I know besides a mobile phone.
flickr
Even if it’s starting to suck more and more everyday, a good chunk of my online contacts use it. It’s still a nifty site for photos and a wee bit of video in terms of ease of use and subscriber base, and I might as well keep it for communication purposes and the occasional photos.
Multiply
I use it for things that flickr can’t do. I like it for mass uploads; you can just dump a bunch of related photos and it’s automatically segregated in a set, perfect for event photos. Other than that, I don’t really use it much for anything else, but I think it’s a keeper because of its features.
Photobucket
It’s my repository for random stuff like funny macros, snapshots to show friends & the occasional retarded shit.
ebay
I frequently rummage ebay for stuff that aren’t locally available. Bidding’s a bitch, but so far, I haven’t seen any alternative that’s quite like it.
Skype
I don’t really use it often, but my current boss is requiring me to use it for conferences. Ah well, maybe I could use it for friends and relatives who are overseas.
TipidPC
I like it for selling and purchasing electronic stuff locally. Selling can be a pain with all the persistent hagglers and lowballers, but I got a bunch of good deals out of it.
Plurk
I’m not really sure on this one, but so far, I’ve been enjoying it. I’ll try to see where I can take this.
Some message boards and websites (cosplay.ph, rangefinderforum, /p/, gamepolitics, etc.)
If they keep on providing useful information, I might as well keep them.
Sites to let go (I won’t be deleting them, but I will be placing them in eternal limbo)
Some email accounts
I don’t think anyone uses Hotmail anymore. Also, it sounds gay (Hot Male, Ouyez). I’ll also have to ditch some of my bogus e-mail accounts.
MSN messenger & ICQ
It’s been a long time since I used these that I already forgot my account details
Friendster
“Hi p0h kUyA!!!!!!! cAn u aDd mE p0h?!?!? pA-tEsTi DiN p0h!!!! TnX!!!!!! mUaH!!!! uuu”
Gaia Online
I think I’m too old to be playing with dress-up dolls.
DeviantArt
It’s actually nice- for graphic artists. And since I can’t draw anything better than stick people beating the living shit out of each other (and explosm already beat me to the idea), I see no point in keeping it… except, maybe, to keep in touch with some contacts.
Youtube
I only made an account to go on an online crusade against a troll. Retarded, I know.
Crunchyroll
I don’t have the time to be watching full-length videos. My workplace doesn’t have the bandwidth anymore, either.
Ipernity, LinkenIn & Art Limited
Has anyone even heard of these? No? I Thought so.
Livejournal
Locked emo boo-fucking-hoo entries galore! Ick! Reading some of the stuff I wrote years ago makes me cringe.
A lot of message boards and websites (Yahoo!Groups, webcomics, /v/, etc.)
If they keep on showing those ads for t-shirts and fleshlights, I might as well let them go.
